I was expecting to have another ‘good value for money’ experience. But this stay was nothing short of exceptional. The accommodation was characterful and beautifully presented. The location is fantastic. But Jays hosting is on a different level from any of my previous experiences. Thoughtful enough to leave carafes of chilled water for our return from a wedding party - and happy to present us with homemade pancakes and crispy bacon stacks at a time to suit us. He was even happy to assist us with a car shuttle if required. I couldn’t ask for more or fault the experience in any way. Highly recommended in every way!

What a gem! We feel very lucky to have discovered Jay and Mary’s place. The house is an extraordinary place, a pleasure to visit. The rooms are beautifully done, with a wonderful attention to detail and great style. A little tray of tea, coffee and water in each room goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. Flannelette sheets and loads of pillows on a comfy bed, combined with the peaceful surroundings, make for a super chilled night’s rest. The guest rooms are in their own wing of the house, so feel very private, but the family welcomed us for delicious breakfast in the kitchen in the morning and it was really the best of both worlds. Stay here if you have the chance! In the morning we went walking in Tollymore Forest, which was just stunning, and right at the end of the road. Thank you Jay & Mary (and Danny and Douglas) for a home from home.

Jay and Mary (plus Dougal the dog and their lovely sweet son) are so welcoming and their home is gorgeous. We spent 3 nights in ‘Room 1’. The cottage is a stones throw from Tollymore forest and a short drive from shops and restaurants in Newcastle. It’s a beautiful and peaceful area, perfect for a relaxing weekend. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The guest rooms feel quite separated from the main parts of the house used by the family so feel nice and private. Jay and Mary were fantastic hosts. Mary cooked us breakfast each morning- lovely buttermilk pancakes with bacon, fruit, syrup- delicious. Jay supplied loads of fresh coffee and milk to take to our room as well as fresh cold water. We went to a wedding nearby and left our car there overnight. Jay really kindly took us to collect our car the next day. Nothing seemed like too much trouble for them. Such a lovely family. We would highly recommend a stay at Bryansford Cottage.

Every detail of staying in Jays house was fantastic: On arrival Jay insisted on carrying our luggage to our rooms, and made us a welcome cuppa! The Location: The house is in the village of Bryansford, which is 10 min drive from the seaside town of Newcastle (great for restaurants, cafes and bars and coastal walks!). The house itself is about 100 m from the entrance to Tollymore Forest park, which is perfect for either gentle strolls, or as a gateway into the Mournes for the more adventurous walkers, mountain bikers or even cyclists exploring the high mountain roads! Or if Swimming in the sea is your thing then Mary (Jays wife) will direct you to the best spots (We ended up swimming, sans wet suits, with about 20 other regulars who meet at the harbour every Sunday morning)! The House & accommodation: The house is approximately 200 years old and sits in its own grounds with an amazing views of the mountains! Jay told us that he and his lovely wife have been restoring it for the past couple of years and it shows: our bedroom was really comfortable, cosy and very tastefully decorated. Each room has an en-suite and the attention to detail and decoration of both the room and en-suite was wonderful: Jay even built the wash stands himself using singer sewing machine bases! Comfort: Being a big old house we were a bit worried that it might have been cold for our kids (especially as we just had the first cold snap of the winter...but this was definately not the case: Jay told us that they had installed a new boiler and new column radiators in all the rooms recently. This meant that the heavy solid walls held the heat and then released it slowly over the course of the night (So no waking with cold noses in the middle of the night!)...He was right, we were super toasty! I would happily recommend staying here as it ticked all our boxes: Spacious, great access to nature, great local knowledge, perfect for families and lovely hosts.
